Discover Monash City
Monash City is a local government area in Victoria, Australia. It is located in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne and covers an area of approximately 81 square kilometers. The population of Monash City is estimated to be over 185,000 people as of 2021.
The area was named after Sir John Monash, an Australian engineer and military commander who played an important role during World War I. Monash City was established in 1994 following the amalgamation of the former City of Oakleigh, City of Waverley, and part of the City of Knox.
Monash City is known for its diverse range of residential neighborhoods, with both established areas and newer developments. The area is home to several major institutions, including Monash University, Monash Health, and the Australian Synchrotron.
In addition to its residential communities and educational institutions, Monash City boasts a range of parks, reserves, and recreational facilities. Popular attractions include Jells Park, which features picnic areas, walking trails, and a lake, as well as the Waverley Basketball Centre and the Oakleigh Recreation Centre.
Monash City also has a thriving commercial sector, with several major shopping centers located throughout the area. These include Chadstone Shopping Centre, one of the largest shopping centers in the Southern Hemisphere, as well as Brandon Park and The Glen shopping centers.
The local government of Monash City is led by a council comprising nine elected members, including a mayor. Council meetings are open to the public and held on a regular basis to discuss matters related to the local community.
